So I had this shot lined up in my mind for the 4th but as you might have gathered from the alternative title I had a couple of other more pressing things happening. Anyway…my July 4th is happening on the 7th!
This shot was taken from a parking area just off the road between Mooresville and Blowing Rock in NC. My wife and I took a day out from raising financial support for our missionary activities in Edinburgh for a little sightseeing in the Blue RIdge Mountains. Blowing Rock is a great little mountain town in the Blue RIdge Mountains. Unfortunately, the day that we visited the rain was it’s best friend and we had to dodge between the quaint little shops on the high street to avoid getting drenched. Just before we were due to leave the sun broke through the clouds and produced that soft clear light that happens just after precip when the sun is low in the sky. I tried make the best use of the light by taking some portrait shots of Caroline and myself but ran out of time to shoot any decent shots of Blowing Rock.
The road back produced wonderful vistas over the mountains, so much so that we pulled off for some photos. When I saw this old ragged flag I just knew that it would make a great foreground piece with the layers of mountains as a background. The fall colours just added to the composition. The difficulty was trying to get the depth of field required for a decent exposure in the fading light. I wish that I could say that I was really smart and set everything up to make this shot work…however, i just whacked the little Canon A80 I was shooting with onto Auto and fired away! Oh, thank the Lord for Auto!
