Dandelions always make such great subjects for macro photography. The field next to my parents’ home is alive with them and they stand out wonderfully backlit by the late afternoon sun. I took my chance to capture some of them. Now one would think it super easy to do a great shot of a stationary subject however it isn’t as easy as it may seem. Firstly, I don’t own a macro lens — so let’s improvise with the long end of my 70-300mm. Secondly, I want to capture the whole flower of the dandelion in diminishing light with a slow lens — so let’s lie down on my belly in the thorns and dying grass of the Free State veld and use my body and elbows as a tripod. Thirdly, pump up the ISO so that you can use a large enough f-stop to produce adequate depth of field. Lastly, do just a little bit of post processing!
